You've got a mail! A new Floating Points selection has arrived mixesdb.com/?492556

Feel free to savour it while it's fresh and delicious Smilie - wink.png

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

Yea have so many mixes to listen to from the past week. Flopo, MCDE, Selectors sets...

Btw are you familiar with "The Identification of Music Group" on Facebook? According to several sources it seems to be good spot to ID tracks. I'm not on FB so I don't know much more...

mixmag.net/feature/the-identification-of-music-group

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

Yea I requested to get in but they never responded haha. I think there were a lot of trolls spamming "Darude - Sandstorm" and stuff like that so they are wary of letting new people in.

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

Hey, thanks for spotting that new Floating Points mix @ NTS! I happen to have checked this very morning on the NTS schedule if he'd make a new broadcast and found nothing. Plus it's impossible to check every NTS mixcloud upload, there's just too many of them!

So big thanks to you for bringing it here Smilie - joy.gif

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

No worries! Yea it showed up on my Facebook news feed and you do most of the work uploading his stuff so figured I'd try and help out.

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

Smilie - smile.png

Also pretty excited about his new album/soundtrack and related documentary coming out pretty soon. residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=38622

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

Ok now my two fav DJs releasing two extensive mixes on the same day? I don't know if I can handle it Smilie - ahhh.gif

You spotted the Four Tet on FB as well? Never heard of this Lot Radio before, definitely have to check them out. Thanks for posting!!

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

I know been listening to these all day. Yup this one also showed up on the feed. I don't know too much about Lot Radio I think but have seen a few clips since a lot of DJs I like play on there when they visit NYC. Also MCDE has his monthly show tomorrow I think so this is a pretty awesome week.

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

Haha exactly, I was already stalking the MCDE show tracklist page yesterday Smilie - smile.png Strangely they didn't upload it yet... worldwidefm.net/show/state-of-rhythm-danil…

The Four Tet mix is one of his best lately. I didn't notice right away who was the guy with him (Tyondai Braxton) although he looked familiar. He's nothing less than Anthony Braxton son, one of the great jazzmen of the '70s! If you're into avant-garde jazz I can't recommend you enough to check out his Alto album, a real milestone Smilie - smile.png rateyourmusic.com/release/album/anthony-br…

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the rec and fun fact! Will need to check it out. I was pretty much just an alt and indie rock guy until last year when I saw FP, Four Tet and Daphni in LA. Had my view of music changed completely. Been spending the past year catching up on all the great house, funk, jazz, disco, etc. of the world.

Also yeah I think both the new FP and Four Tet mixes are some of their best of late. Exciting times.

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

Haha I pretty much discovered Soul, Funk & Disco when I watched the Four Tet London Boiler Room the first time Smilie - smile.png A real life changer! Have you check out Mr Scruff' sets? They're pretty groovy and eclectic as well.

ps: There was a Resident Advisor live stream @ Sonar this wk and somehow they failed to broadcast this: sonar.es/en/2017/artists/daphni-hunee Smilie - mad.gif

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

Yea Mr. Scruff has that similar eclectic philosophy as well. Pretty annoyed they didn't stream Daphni b2b Hunee but one can only hope they release a recording like they did with Ben UFO b2b Helena Hauff last year. The world needs more Hunee mixes. I did think Beautiful Swimmers were awesome on the stream tho.

omgomgomogmog

They did it again! Smilie - ahhh.gif Smilie - joy.gif Smilie - ahhh.gif

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

Four Tet and FP live set, MCDE radio show, and an all star b2b Hessle show in the same week????

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

ikr Smilie - thumbsup.gif

did you check out the Jeremy Underground @ Dimensions set as well? mixesdb.com/?481736

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

Oh wow no that slipped under the radar somehow. So much good stuff right now

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

How did our intelligence agency fail to spot this one?! Smilie - blink.gif

mixcloud.com/CanelaEnSurco/canela-en-surco…

hot hot hot! Smilie - ahhh.gif

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

Ohhh shit good catch haha. Saw him for the first time last weekend and it was so much fun. He needs to release more live sets.

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

Wow rly didn't know any of the songs on the MCDE mix you posted. Shows how little I know haha

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

Johnson & Hawkins & Tatum & Durr - You Can't Blame Me and Rita Wright - Touch Me Take Me

were already two of my favs Smilie - listen.gif

I found another unspotted rare groove diggin' set from him. Keep your eyes peeled Smilie - wink.png

btw did he play only deep house or also disco/boogie last weekend? I might be able to catch him in September!

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

He played a little of everything. In the last half hour at one point he played Ice - Reality then followed it up with Hi-Tech Jazz. Also as is tradition he played Dancing Into The Stars haha

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

Cool, thx! Makes me want to see him even more Smilie - thumbsup.gif Btw I just added my first mix on here, if you're curious. First episode is dedicated to Brazil. I remember some of the tracks were played by FP and the likes at some point but there are also unspotted gems from my own digging Smilie - wink.png mixesdb.com/?483647

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

Yea he hasn't come around the US in like 5 years so hopefully our excitement as a crowd convinced him to come over more often. Checked out the mix great Tim Maia edit! Personally still slowly learning how to mix well but hopin to one day be able to put something up

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

Floating Points somehow flew all the way to LA from Dekmantel last weekend and played for like 3 hours. Talked to one of the guys who warmed up and he said they recorded it all. Get ready for some fire tunes

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

Wow great news Smilie - blink.gif

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

unfortunately I think most gigs are recorded but very few end up being released...

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

True... Far Away (the promoters) have done a pretty good job getting stuff out there tho. they released recordings from Four Tet and Young Marco before and this was their 5 year anniversary party so this one could be out there! Also waiting on some of those Dekmantel recordings to come out...

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

Yes I've seen that name (Far Away) a few times indeed. Fingers crossed for FP! Btw I just stumbled upon this rare CD mix from him. I wonder if it's available anywhere... discogs.com/Floating-Points-Disk-Union-Mix…

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

One can only hope a kind owner ripped it and uploaded it somewhere...

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

oh btw wanted to ask what mixer do you use? i'm looking to upgrade from my garbage beginner numark to one with analog components. so far i'm debating whether to get something that's not too pricey like a used xone 32, or just go big with a rotary. rotaries just seem like the way to mix but they're so expensive

Nelfox5 (talkcontribs)

Rotaries are "the stuff dreams are made of" haha. What about getting the one specially custom made by FP himself? isonoe.com/floating-points-mixer/ Only costs an arm and leg lol

So far I've been using a Traktor S4 mk2 + macbook and I'm fully satisfied the combo. I can't afford to mix on vinyl (yet) so digital it is for me. The rare tracks unavailable in lossless files I always find a way to rip them directly from vinyl or find someone who has a copy so it's a good compromise between the two worlds (digital/analog) imo. And with that controller I can mix with turntables as well (although I never tried).

About mixers, I know that Allen & Heath is a solid value but I won't be able to help you to choose as I never looked into it. But I know it's important to determine your needs first and foremost: do you want to play vinyl, cd or digital? Home or at events? How many channels do you need? Will you scratch? etc.

Kevlu93 (talkcontribs)

Ah gotcha yea I started with a numark mixtrack, and the quality wasn't great so I decided to switch to something better. Didn't think the turntables were that much more than a good controller, but slowly realized buying vinyl is not cheap at all... honestly music can be a pricey hobby haha
