Help:ID Samples

ID Samples are snippets of a track to identify an (to you) unknown track.
The main advantage is that the fils are hosted directly on MixesDB, are hosted till they are identified (ID'ed) and can be drag'n'dropped diretcly into the viewer's player. Of course you can copy the direct link and use it on other websites in order to get the track identified. Fake files only used for other websites will be deleted.
ID Sample List
Create ID Samples
You could record a new mp3 while you play the track, but easier is to edit the mp3 set directly. We recommend the free mp3DirectCut. Just drag'n'drop the mp3 into it, cut out what you don't need, save. No de- or encoding requiered. Easy.
Upload ID samples
You can upload mp3 files for tracklists on existing mix pages. We use strict limits: Maximum 1 MB and 45 seconds (that means not 1 minute at 700 KB).
Before uploading: Be sure the file has a meaningful filename. Best is to have the mix page title included in the destination filename.
Imbed into tracklist
Before you start you should read Help:Tracklists to know how to set up a new tracklist or how to edit an existing one.
For including the uploaded file on a page, copy the name after uploading (including the file extension, for example "2008-02-24 - Dave Lambert - Switch - ID1.mp3"). Edit the page you want to include the file on.
Hit the media button
and include the copied filename at the new position of your cursor with the options as described below.
{{Media||ID}} This is what the media button includes as default code.
- Your cursor will be placed where you have to paste the filename.
- "ID" can be changed to an alternate text being displayed.
- Remove "ID" to have the full file name displayed as link text.
Clicking the icon will take you to the description page of the file.
Clicking the icon will play the music and show the duration.
indicates that it's an external file.
- Clicking the link will let you download the file.
Note that if you have problems with the playback in preview or after saving it might help to first paste the file name, mark it and then hit the media button.

This is a good example for a playlist using all gaps as ID Samples.
You can download the files or even better: drag'n'drop the link into your player to play them directly in your local player.
- External links
If you have uploaded samples on other hosts before and those are not direct links, you can add such links to the tracklist as well by simply entering the URL without the Media code (example). Note that these go offline one day, according to their hosting rules. For external linking options see Help:Editing & Formatting.
Keep track
- Watchlist: Whenever you add an ID Sample to a tracklist, add the mix page to your watchlist so you get an E-mail whenever the mix page is edited or a comment is posted.
- Upload log: Keep track of all files you have uploaded by entering your own user name.
- You could also add all your ID's on your profile. For example see User:MDB.
- The ID Sample List lists all mp3's in the database. We're working on a better view.
Solved ID's
When an ID Sample gets identified, e.g. by a comment, remove it from the tracklist of the mix page and add the trackname (also remove it from all other pages; therfor check the desc page on which other pages the file is linked on). It will be deleted later since it will appear on the unused files list.
Please do NOT include solved samples in the tracklist although you may think "that's useful, now people can hear this great track" etc. There are 2 reasons why solved Samples have to be deleted: On the one hand we'd have to pay fees to include audio samples in general (as long a it's unidentified it's ok), on the other hand the ID Sample list lists all audio files and is linked on other websites to identify the samples; therefor solved samples shouldn't be listed there.
